Second Storey Deck and Pergola

When an existing deck shows wear but the underlying structure is still sound, replacing only the deck surface can deliver a fresh, cost-effective result. That was the approach we took for this second‑storey deck in Kambah, ACT — reuse the existing frame, replace the decking, and add features that lift both function and aesthetics.

The existing substructure was inspected and kept in place as it was structurally sound, reducing waste, and cost; the old boards were replaced with a new decking surface prepared for finishing oil to protect and enhance the timber grain, a pergola was added to create shade and an outdoor entertainment space with clear UV‑filtering panels integrated to cut some of the harsh sun, whilst still preserving light. A frameless glass guardrail was fitted to maintain unobstructed views and a contemporary finish.

Finished result The completed deck is bright, durable and inviting. The new surface, freshly oiled, enhances the timber’s natural tones and will be easier to maintain. The pergola with UV‑filtering panels creates a comfortable outdoor living area, and the glass guardrail preserves views while meeting safety requirements.
