Merbau Deck with Seating
A new build in Wright, ACT, presented the familiar opportunity: a backyard that arrived as a blank canvas. The homeowners wanted an outdoor space that felt integrated with their new home, and offered comfortable areas for entertaining and everyday use. This project shows how thoughtful planning and simple details can transform raw space into a functional, attractive deck.
Before any timber went down, we addressed the basics. The backyard grade needed shaping to manage stormwater and prevent pooling near the house. As part of the landscaping stage we installed a discreet drainage system that directs runoff away from the dwelling and the deck footprint. That early investment avoided future problems and allowed the deck structure to sit on a stable, dry base.
Deck design and layout The final design is focused on flow and usability. A broad step runs around the deck perimeter, creating a gentle transition from paving to deck and defining the main entertainment zone. This step provides casual seating and a visual frame for the space while reducing the perceived height from ground level.
At the top-left corner sits a built-in seating area, recessed into the deck plan to make a cosy, spot for conversation. The seating integrated into the deck to ensure a cohesive look.
The completed deck converts an empty backyard into a flexible outdoor living area tailored for entertaining and everyday family use. The combination of a low, wide perimeter step and dedicated built-in seating gives several usable zones within a compact footprint, while the early attention to drainage and groundworks ensures the space will perform well over time.
If you’re planning a new deck in the ACT or surrounding areas, starting with site drainage and a clear layout makes all the difference. This Wright project demonstrates how straightforward detailing and sensible sequencing produce a finished deck that’s both practical and welcoming.
